What Camera Does Zoella Use?
Updated: March 7, 2017
Zoella is a British vlogger and author. She has become an international superstar globally through her YouTube channel. She creates beauty and fashion related videos. Her YouTube channel has over 11 million subscribers and over 935 million views. She has also written three highly successful novels. In additional to all this, she has her own line of beauty products. And she is only 26 years old!
The main driving force behind Zoella's popularity and success is her fame on YouTube. She started uploading videos in 2009. She was one of very first vloggers at that time. She was creating 10-2o minutes videos on a consistent basis. Then her channel gained traction over a period of time. She crossed 1 million subscribers in 2013, 5 million in 2014 and 10 million in 2016. She was creating real, simple, trendy videos on a consistent basis. And these four things collectively help her gain traction.

What Camera Does Zoella Use?
Zoella uses this camera for her stationary videos. She uses this camera for creating videos in her studio. The main reason for choosing this camera is its incredible video quality and as it’s quite heavy she prefers it to use it only indoors.

Canon 70D In Detail:
This camera has a 20.2MP sensor with a Digic 5+ processor and it can record videos up to 1080p at 30 fps. The overall video quality is stunning, you can just check out some of the recent videos of Zoella to get an idea of the quality. It has a flip touch screen with a 3” display of 1.04 million pixels. A camera with a flip screen is one of the most essential and demanded features by vloggers. With the help of a flipping screen you can easily set the frame, and also monitor the video in real time. This helps a lot if you are creating videos alone, you will know whether you are in frame or not, whether the focus is proper or not, etc. Overall it will save you a lot of time in the end.
It has built in Wi-Fi. Traditionally you would have to use a USB cable to transfer the videos but now with Wi-Fi you can easily transfer the videos wirelessly. You won’t have to carry any extra cables when you are doing outdoor shoots.
One of the main selling points of this camera is its phenomenally fast and accurate autofocus. It’s very rare to see an insanely fast and accurate autofocus system in a DSLR. And for vloggers the autofocus system is very crucial. It can focus any moving object in just 0.65 seconds, that’s how fast this camera is. You can also create action vlogs with this camera.
The heart of any video is the audio quality. No matter how great your video is, if the audio quality is not good then the video will not succeed. Audio quality is very crucial. For getting the best possible audio quality you need an external microphone, because the built in microphones on the cameras are not that good. This camera supports external microphones, so there is no problem regarding audio here.
The battery life of this camera is fairly good. It lasts up to 920 shots, while the industry average for DSLR’s is around 894 shots. Though most of the vloggers are going to use this camera for shooting videos in their home studio, so battery life should not be a problem anyways.
On the flip side the weight of the Canon 70D is pretty heavy at 755 grams. It would not be a very pleasant experience to carry this camera throughout the day. And that’s the reason Zoella prefers it to use in her studio. Also this camera cannot shoot videos at 60fps, it can shoot videos in 1080p at 30fps but we would have loved the 60fps too. It’s not that big of a deal for creating vlogs.
- Full HD Recording (1080p at 30fps)
- Flipping screen
- Touch screen
- External microphone support
- Long battery life (920 shots)
- Fast and accurate autofocus
- Heavy body (755 grams)
- Not able to shoot in 60fps
This concludes the review of the Canon 70D. Overall it’s a really good camera for shooting videos in your studio or a private space, where you can put the camera on a tripod. It has pretty much all the most essential features for vloggers. If you are serious about vlogging, then this camera is a really good choice.
Zoella uses this camera for her outdoor shoots. Basically for creating her vlogs and in the videos where she is moving around, she prefers this camera over the Canon 70D as the S120 is lighter. The Canon S120 has a 12 MP lens which can record up to 1080p at 60fps. The overall video quality is awesome.

Canon S120 In Detail:
It has built in Wi-Fi. In many cameras we have noticed that setting up the Wi-Fi can be a daunting task, but here it’s extremely easy and fast. It has built in intelligent optical image stabilization system. Its optical image stabilization has six modes – Normal, Panning, Macro, Dynamic, Powered and Tripod. The intelligent image stabilization system the one of the six modes automatically as per the shooting condition.
It has a 24mm wide lens. A wider lens is required when you are going to create videos at a closer distance. And we all know that the most popular type of vlogs are the talking in the camera type of vlogs. With the help of this wide lens you can create really good quality videos at a closer distance.
It is a very light weight and a portable camera at just 217 grams. It is the main reason why Zoella uses this, the Canon S120, over the Canon 70D for creating the videos where she is moving or in some sort of activity. The form factor of this camera is portable and pocketable, that’s the reason why it is arguably the best camera for YouTube, when it comes to creating vlogs. You can use this camera in a fully manual mode. You can change the settings as per your personal preferences and requirements. It can also record time lapses. You can add a small section of around 10-20 seconds section in your vlog showcasing a time lapse of any interesting situation like a construction of a building, flying birds, sunset, etc. This will add a little bit of flair in your channel and also help you in differentiating on YouTube.
On the flip side the battery life of this camera is terrible. It only lasts up to 230 shots. Because of the portability of the camera, it’s quite obvious that we are going to use it outdoors more. So, to continuously shoot your videos you would have to carry a couple of extra batteries with you always. It also lacks a flipping screen, one of the essential feature for vloggers. Without a flipping screen it would be hard for you to know whether you are in the frame or not, whether the focus is proper or not, etc. It also lacks an external microphone jack.
The audio quality of built in microphones are not that great most of the time and this camera is no exception. Sadly you would either have to depend upon the poor built in microphone or have to use a portable microphone. Then you would have to sync the audio with the video every time.
- Full HD Recording
- Optical image stabilization
- Wide lens
- Light weight
- No Flipping screen
- Not the best battery life
- No external microphone jack
This concludes the review of the Canon PowerShot S120. Overall it is a good vlogging camera for shooting videos on the go. The main selling point of this camera is its portability and incredible video quality. You won’t find this great combination very often. Though it lacks a flipping screen and a good battery life, it seems like a good option for daily vloggers. Zoella is using this camera to create her vlogs and outdoor videos currently.
Zoella started creating videos on YouTube in 2009 and in just six years she has now become one of the most popular YouTube stars. YouTube has given her the fame and popularity in such a short amount of time. She has leveraged her popularity and created her own line of beauty products, which is doing incredibly well. She has also authored three bestselling novels. And her age is only 26.
Vlogging is growing every passing day. Achieving the popular and success in such a short amount of time as Zoella did may seem like a dizzying and unrealistic goal, but with powerhouse mediums like YouTube, it is not a crazy as you might think. And if you want to create high quality vlogs like Zoella, then getting either of these cameras, the Canon 70D or the Canon S120, is a great place to start your vlogging game.
